It contains a large variety of geological exhibits and detailed accounts of the citys' past surface mining that gave rise to the country's massive gold rush. The Provincial Conference marks the beginning of a new term of local government and also sets the agenda for local government for the next five (5) years. The conference is set out to be a platform where, among others, members of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of SALGA are elected ahead of SALGA’s National Conference.
The CITES conference continues in South Africa. Thousands of delegates are gathered at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. They've been discussing how to more effectively protect endangered wildlife, as well as uplift the communities who live nearby wildlife habitats. So far, representatives have agreed to ban the trade in all eight African and Asian pangolin species. Representatives have also agreed to form a working group on how to protect Africa's lions. Clashes continued though over increased protection of the continent's elephants. 29 countries want a total ban on the ivory trade while four Southern African countries say sales of ivory and trophy hunting are vital to conservation efforts.
Cites COP 17 began Saturday and will run until 2 October. The aim is to educate people about the sale of endangered species. The public is welcome to view exhibitions at the Sandton Convention Centre. Our producer Kirat Lalla is there to tell us more. For more news, visit: http://www.sabc.co.za/news
